Using family as interpreters is not always enough

A Specialist Diabetes Nurse booked a Bengali interpreter to help with relaying complex care information. The session also involved a Dietitian. There was a lot of information to explain and the session lasted longer than the booked 60 minutes.

The woman and her husband were very happy with the outcome of the session. They described it as `feeling like being at a doctors surgery in Bangladesh – everything was clearly explained and interpreted`.

They always use their children and daughter-in-law to interpret but not everything is clearly interpreted. They have asked the Specialist Diabetes Nurse to request a SIS interpreter for all future diabetes and G.P. appointments.
