Sussex Interpreting Services (SIS) held a community picnic at the Friends Meeting House in Brighton on 2nd July 2024, bringing together 32 colleagues (Self-Employed Linguists, Volunteers, Trustees and Staff) for an afternoon of catching up and celebration. The picnic was a great opportunity to relax and get to know each other a little better outside our usual working environments.
Attendees enjoyed an array of delicious foods and shared stories and experience. The picnic also provided a chance for recently enrolled Linguists and new Trustees and Staff to meet and engage with their colleagues in the tranquil garden setting.
The picnic shows SIS’s commitment to maintaining supportive and inclusive professional relationships. It was a wonderful afternoon that lifted those that came along:
“I felt really blessed to have come back to SIS and attended this picnic, l was really happy to see all those faces of staff helping in the job allocations so far during this half year of my work. That was a very nice day, warm weather, lovely green garden, nice food, some are home made too which were very tasty also, and with sumptuous drinks, hot and cold, …etc…what a lovely occasion that we could get familiar with SIS.
Moreover, having the opportunity to talk to Directors, Trustees and other linguists made me feel more attached with the SIS families, knowing more about the organization, which in turn made me like my role as a linguist more in a concrete and lively sense.” Baguio – SIS Community Interpreter
“I was very happy to meet some colleagues in Summer picnic last Tuesday. It is an opportunity to met people speaking different language and coming from different backgrounds to share our thoughts cultures and food.” Lama – SIS Volunteer Social Prescriber
“These meetings are very helpful for us interpreters to be able to get the support and share experiences with fellow linguists. It is a solitary job, so there is very little opportunities to do so. Finding out information on additional courses and support and advice we might need from more experienced interpreters is invaluable. Thank you for making that possible!” Joanna – SIS Community Interpreter
“It was such a lovely opportunity to get together with SIS linguists and staff in a beautiful garden. I really enjoyed catching up with linguists, some of whom I hadn’t seen in person since before the pandemic. It was also great to meet some of our newer interpreters and put faces to names!” Laura – SIS Projects Coordinator
Sussex Interpreting Services continues to support local communities by breaking down language barriers and enabling access to services. The picnic at Friends Meeting House is one of the many ways SIS shows appreciation for the incredible people that make this possible.
