Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) are conducting a needs assessment of international migrants.
SIS is the largest provider of services to migrants in the city. We are part of the Steering Group.
We have already provided 50 pages of comparative data and helped with a Literature Review. 10 of our linguists and volunteer linguists have been trained as Community Researchers.
A Report will make recommendations for commissioners, service providers and decision makers to improve the lives of international migrants in the City.
It will also provide a tool for migrant community organisations to better understand the needs of their communities and how they can work with service providers to meet those needs together.
The UNESCO description of a migrant is being used as a starting point in this project – a migrant as; “any person who lives temporarily or permanently in a country where he or she was not born”.
International migrant means anyone born in another country who has moved to BHCC, is planning to stay for 1 year, has any reason for coming, has any immigration status (including none). There is no limit on how long they can have been here and it includes their family.
The Report will be published in the Autumn.
We are hoping to invite the authors to present a summary to our next AGM.
