The recent tragic events in Southport, where both children and adults were killed or seriously wounded, are heartbreaking. Our deepest sympathies go out to the affected families and the entire community.
It is both inexcusable and appalling that these terrible circumstances have been exploited by far-right racists and Islamophobes, leading to shocking acts of violence against individuals, hotels, businesses, and mosques.
Sussex Interpreting Services (SIS), envisions an inclusive and diverse society where people from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds live in harmony, actively participate in the community, and enjoy equal rights. SIS strongly believes in the right of every individual to be treated with respect and takes pride in fostering multicultural communities and cultural understanding. SIS is dedicated to celebrating diversity and values the contributions of people from every community.
Many of the individuals we serve, as well as our professional and committed linguists, are migrants to the UK—some of whom were, or still are, asylum seekers. Additionally, many of the services we support, including the NHS, are staffed by dedicated individuals who have settled in the UK from abroad. In light of recent events, these people may be feeling frightened, scared, and isolated, both for themselves and for their families and communities.
SIS unequivocally condemns the far-right racist thugs who have committed these despicable acts of hostility and violence against innocent communities and individuals. We stand in solidarity with all who oppose racism and Islamophobia and are committed to doing everything within our power to support and assist any community, family, or individual who feels threatened or vulnerable due to recent events.
SIS will be speaking alongside many others at the Solidarity Rally organised by Brighton & Hove Stand Up To Racism (BHSUTR):
