Important local research on the needs of LGBTQ Migrants, Refugees & Asylum Seekers was published in March 2018.
The Report is called LGBTQ Migrants, Refugees and Asylum Seekers’ Pathways and Support in Brighton & Hove.
The Report records the Background:
“LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) organisations in Brighton & Hove and across the UK report rises in the numbers of people seeking support with immigration issues. This is taking place in a political environment that is increasingly hostile towards all migrants”.
LGBTQ Migrants, Refugees and Asylum Seekers face several interconnected barriers to receiving support. Professional and empathetic interpreting services are vital. Several national examples of serious breaches of confidentiality by interpreters are given, resulting in persecution and homelessness.
A key recommendation from the Report is that LGBTQ awareness training should be delivered to local interpreters.
SIS strives to work inclusively and with the most vulnerable and excluded. We fully support this recommendation.
