NEVER AGAIN!
SIS has a specific commitment to supporting Holocaust Memorial Day in our Equal Opportunity & Diversity Policy
This year is the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 25th Anniversary of the Bosnian Genocide.
Last year, as Convener of Brighton & Hove Stand Up To Racism (BHSUTR), I was proud to Chair a very engaging and well attended HMD event with speakers from a local Synagogue and Refugee organisations.
This year 50 people came to #StandTogether to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2020. SIS colleagues and a Trustee were among participants.
We started our meeting with a moving film of Unite members on an educational visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau – please see a link below
Our 2 principal speakers Jason Porter and Gaby Weiner were interviewed by Latest TV prior to our public meeting – please see a link below.
Gaby – author of Tales of Loving and Leaving – spoke movingly about her grandmother who was murdered in the Treblinka death camp.
Jason Porter (University of Brighton), spoke chillingly on ‘Hidden from History: The Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals’.
Many people were struck by the comparisons between Berlin in the 1920s and 30s and Brighton and Hove!
Both speakers gave a wider picture of what life was like for Jewish and LGBT people before, during and after 1939-1945.
We remember and organise together to make sure such atrocities never happen again!
