SIS was delighted to support our local Black History Family Day. This vibrant community event is part of Black History Month, founded to recognise the contributions that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to this country over many generations.
Black History Month has been celebrated for over 40 years and has expanded to include the history of all black people and communities.
Staff and Trustees participated and ran an information Stall as part of our commitment to delivering language services at the heart of our communities. We spoke with several service users, rekindled connections and friendships and danced.
There was a packed programme of fun activities and informative workshops. In the morning there was also the Black History Bus Tour. The tour takes people to city landmarks that represent the historical contributions and stories of BME residents of Brighton and Hove with commentary by Bert Williams MBE & Suchi Chatterjee. We are proud to have Bert as a SIS member.
One of the highlights was a Black History film about the life story of Thomas Highflyer, by Judith Ricketts, followed by a talk with Bert and Suchi. You can find out more about Thomas Highflyer here: https://www.facebook.com/ThomasHighflyerproject/
