SIS was really pleased to work with Best Foot Music, Brighton Jubilee Library and EuroMernet to celebrate Refugee Week.
We focussed on the positive contribution that refugees make, their resilience and some of their stories.
The theme this year was Our Home
We heard some poetry addressing exile and enjoyed beautiful Oud playing from Bashir.
It was wonderful to be in such a welcoming space. Congratulations to Brighton & Hove Libraries who have recently all been awarded Library of Sanctuary status.
Our Chair Aidan introduced a film made especially for Refugee Week by the Nisaba Charity
The 7 minute film speaks to Solafa – a SIS Community Interpreter – about what home means to her Another Home – “We Bleed The Same Blood”
Katherine from SIS also read out Solafa`s Story as Solafa could not be with us.
The story describes how Solafa, her husband and young family spent 10 years trying to leave Gaza and how she eventually became part of our SIS family in May 2023.
Katherine also read out Monica`s Story: “Why I love being a SIS Interpreter!”. Monica has worked with SIS for 22 years, having arrived in the UK from Syria and speaking very little English.
It is a humorous piece which is also referred to as the “magic milk story”. We hope to publish it on our website soon.
Thank you to everyone who contributed and supported this event and all other Refugee Week events.
