Thanks to funding from Brighton and Hove City Council, SIS now has fully accessible covid 19 information pages in the 6 most spoken languages in the city Arabic, Bengali, Simplified Chinese, Farsi, Polish and Portuguese.
Details of the original resources are found here on the English language page and also on dedicated covid translated information pages on the BHCC website and SCHP website. What makes the SIS pages different is that they have been designed to be entirely presented in the target language with each link (in the target language) taking the user directly to the translated resource rather than via a English language page, where knowledge of English would be needed to navigate and find the relevant information.
SIS is located in the heart of the community, supporting thousands of individuals who have language needs giving us direct access to those people. The World Health Organisation’s Six Principles of Effective Communication stress the importance of information being delivered by trusted and credible sources who are known to the audience. SIS is well placed not only to produce these resources but also the ability to delivery them directly to individuals who need them and to over 100 grassroots community groups and leaders who are embedded in and support our diverse communities. .
The pages can be accessed directly and easily from the SIS home page www.sussexinterpreting.org.uk and are being updated on a weekly basis. We also feature 11 further language specific pages that we have started to populate with the same information. We are hoping to secure some additional funding to continue rolling out the same quantity and quality of information for all these languages.
